Is Body Mass Index(BMI) a Reliable Health Indicator ?


Being fit is the biggest issue, one could face. But, it is more important to know what's the level of physical fitness you already possess. The Body Mass Index (BMI) lets you evaluate your physical structure. It, actually, is a scale to let you know whether your body weight is in proportion of your height. It is approved as a standard by physicians and is quite reliable.

It is calculated as, BMI = Weight (in kgs) / (Height in meters) 2

It gives a numerical count of a human body's 'fatness' or 'thinness' by estimating amount of fat in the body. It is useful to decide that you need to lose or gain weight or to maintain yourself. Health professionals use the BMI count to suggest what type diet and workout must be carried on. It is considered reliable for a normal adult but there are certain anomalies with it ;
  1. There is a different method of knowing BMI of children and teens.
  2. Women tend to have more body fat than men of same BMI.
  3. Aged people also tend to have more body fat of same BMI younger ones.
  4. BMI healthy limit varies for different body types, like, the limit for South-East Asians is 22.9 in spite of 25.
  5. Athletes or body builders have a high BMI value.
  6. This method is not applicable to pregnant females and breast feeding mothers.
These varying BMI values are due to the level of muscularity and fat proportion in the body. As, a body builder have high muscularity, so is his, BMI count. Thus, it is highly recommendable to find out your BMI count. If it exceeds the limit then workout as high fat content leads to mental and physical discomfort and can cause heart disease and other heath problems.
